Morse Code Trainer

Learn Morse code the way it sticks: by ear, at real speed. You hear a character and tap what it was. Start with two characters; when you get 90 % right, the next one is unlocked.

Press Start and listen.

Your characters (green = sure, red = needs practice)

Tip: don't count dots and dashes — answer by the sound. Space or Enter plays the sound, letter keys answer. Your progress is saved in this browser.

How the trainer works

  1. Listen to the two first characters, K and M, then press Start.
  2. Answer each sound by tapping the letter or pressing the key on your keyboard. Wrong answers are played again so you hear the difference.
  3. Reach 90 % in a round of 20 and a new character is unlocked. Characters you mix up come back more often.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Koch method?

A way of learning Morse developed by the psychologist Ludwig Koch: you listen at full character speed from the start, begin with just two characters and add one more each time you reach 90 % accuracy. Because you never count dots and dashes, you learn to recognise each character as a sound — which is how experienced operators read Morse.

Why 20 WPM and not slower?

At slow speeds every character sounds like a sequence of dots and dashes you have to count. At 20 WPM it becomes one sound pattern, like a word. That is harder for the first few days but much faster in the long run. Choose 15 WPM if 20 feels impossible.

How long does it take to learn Morse code?

With 10–15 minutes a day, most people know all 40 characters by ear in 4 to 8 weeks. Short daily sessions work much better than one long session per week.

Which order are the characters in?

The usual Koch order: K M R S U A P T L O W I . N J E F 0 Y , V G 5 / Q 9 Z H 3 8 B ? 4 2 7 C 1 D 6 X. It mixes short and long characters early so that you do not rely on length.

Is my progress saved?

Yes, in this browser on this device (no account needed). If you clear your browser data or use another device, you start again.

What does the Morse Lux app add?

Daily lessons in four learning paths (write, read, listen, tap), a Morse keyboard for every app, a call-sign trainer, radio contacts to practise, and decoding with the microphone and camera.
